Do Supplements and Diet Really Help People Facing Cancer?

“Cancer is genetic, so diet and supplements will not help your condition.” One of my patients who is facing breast cancer, and someone who has the wisdom to question everything she is told about her condition, recounted the words of one of her care providers before asking for my opinion. It’s always discouraging when someone who is experiencing illness is misinformed by care providers who, while well-intentioned, are not well versed in integrative care, and therefore deny patients a potentially health-and-life-affirming intervention. My response to her was that, while 5-10% of cancers are a result of an inherited gene defect, 30-35% are due directly to dietary factors, and that all cancers are, in fact, influenced by diet. For her specifically, as someone with breast cancer who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, clinical trials have demonstrated that taking Omega-3 supplements improved the ability of chemotherapy to destroy the cancer, and that Omega-3 protected the healthy cells from the chemotherapy so patients had fewer and milder side-effects. Once  I had tailored an integrative care regimen for her, which included supplement, diet, and lifestyle recommendations, she asked me where to acquire the best sources of the supplements I was recommending. At the time, I had not yet created the Healthy Cell Pack, so I told her that, just as over-the-counter pharmaceuticals were not prescription strength, over-the-counter supplements, even when obtained from health food stores, were also not pure or potent enough to be taken therapeutically for most conditions, and were certainly not guaranteed safe. So using my trusted suppliers, I was able to order her the supplements she needed while guaranteeing potency, purity, and safety. Had my patient been insistent about purchasing her supplements elsewhere because they were cheaper or it was more convenient for her, she might have in fact exacerbated her condition and set her treatment back by taking supplements that were not guaranteed pure from a source trusted by an integrative cancer specialist. Let’s just take the example of Omega-3, commonly known as fish oil. The component known as DHA in fish oil can help chemotherapy get to cancer cells and kill them, but only when taken in the right serving size. The fish oil I provided her with, and the same one used in the Healthy Cell Pack(HCP), has a high ratio of DHA compared to that of store-bought brands. Moreover, the fish oil that my patients take, and that is included in HCP, comes with a certificate of analysis that proves it to be free of all contaminants. This is an extremely important consideration when buying fish oil (or any supplement) , as the pollutants from our air and sea can and often do end up in supplements of lesser...

Assuring Safe Use of Supplements For Those Facing Cancer

Essiac and the related product Flor-Essence are two products that my patients often ask me about.  These products may have merit and offer benefit to some people, however, their ingredients may actually drive some hormone sensitive cancers and may alter the metabolism of some chemotherapy. This was demonstrated in a research article that combined the product with cancer cell lines in-vitro. I advise all of my patients to discuss these products with me before adding them to their efforts to achieve wellness. I included a medication and supplement review during each of my appointments for every patient.  For individuals who are facing cancer it is very common for them to  have a list of “natural products”  that have been recommended to them by loving and well-meaning friends or family members who are eager to help. The trouble is, for those facing cancer and conventional treatments many common products can pose a threat by counter-acting chemotherapy or radiation, by making the side-effects of their chemotherapy worse or by increasing the risks associated with surgery such as bleeding abnormalities or altered anesthesia metabolism.  Prior to my introduction of the Healthy Cell Pack there was no product on the market that I felt could be safely used, without the professional advice of a Naturopathic Oncologist, by any person with cancer or undergoing any treatment (there is only one contraindication to HCP, it should not be used with BZM brand name Velcade). As a Naturopathic Oncologist I can evaluate any and all other products you may have heard of and I can also help you to understand and make educated decisions about your treatment options. You can buy the Healthy Cell Pack and know that you are supporting your immune system’s natural ability to fight for you – and you can also contact me at my consulting practice (email Info@IntegrativeCareConsulting.com with “Consultation” in the subject line). My consultation practice is offered online and on the phone so I am able to meet with you no matter where you...
